How to master and putt on quick greens

The Summer months are fast approaching providing golfers with a set of new challenges and conditions providing new challenges. The Masters held at the iconic Augusta National is one course all avid golfers are familiar where precision is paramount.

Having just returned from one of my Sarah Bennett Golf Schools in Greece my guests were presented with testing greens. The combination of the contours, speed and grain a new experience for everyone.

Putting Tips for Quick Greens

  1. The quicker the green the greater the “break” so please take this into account when selecting the line of the putt. Every golfer has their preference as to the pace of their holing out speed. I personally preferred to putt my ball rolling at a slower pace so my “read” of the putt would be very different to a player who strikes their shorter putts more firmly. This is a valid point to remember if caddying during the season during inter club matches.
  2. I would recommend setting up with the putter head “feathering” the green so lightly touching the ground. I find this can assist with a smoother take away assisting with the tempo of the stroke which is key on quick greens.
  3. I am sure we all have a few putters hiding in the loft so consider trying one with a soft insert in the face.
  4. Time to check your putter grip, many golfers rarely change their grip so visit your PGA Professional who can advise. I find the trend fitting a thicker grip to be advantageous. This move can limit unwanted wrist action especially on the shorter putts.
  5. Practice putting downhill putts prior to the round spending time on the putting green with pace specific putting drills. I will post videos on my Sarah Bennett Golf Facebook and Instagram accounts.
  6. Take into account the wind strength when putting down wind the roll of the ball will be affected rolling “faster” Try to visualise the hole closer than it actually is.

I hope this article has provided some useful tips and additional confidence to Master putting on quick greens.
