An exciting week lies ahead for the Ricoh Women's British Open to be held on the stunning Marquess course at Woburn Golf & Country Club one of three gems the facility has to offer. The Marquess is a contrasting course in comparison to the Dukes and Duchess with approach shots requiring pin point accuracy both in distance control and placement. It will be a real treat to see the best in the world tame the tree lined beauty of Woburn, the question will be answered some Sunday evening "Can Charley win her first Major on home soil?"

I personally have many fond memories of the Woburn Country Club which stems back to one of my first Professional events held on the extremely narrow Duchess course in the early to mid 1990's. This is a real test of course management with well directed tee shots the order of play, for those who remember "Woody Woodpecker" the sound echoes across the fairways on a regular basis with very narrow tempting gaps which you may think a 1.68" golf ball should fit through!!! It is amazing with the advancements in technology over the past few years within the golf industry many golfers are still unaware of the custom fitting golf clubs service. It is a highly specialised business with fine lines which is on offer by PGA Professionals who possess the finely tuned equipment to carry out this service.

When I started golf many years ago! custom fitting golf clubs was totally unheard of there were just pretty much three shaft choices Ladies & Men's Regular in both graphite or steel and stiff flex in graphite or steel. I would not want to guess how many various shafts are available today but I know it is in excess of 900 from the shaft manufactures all offering a variety of benefits and playability options which is slightly overwhelming. Much has been written recently regarding the "decline" of players starting this wonderful game but the industry has changed hugely since I started golf over 30 years ago. There has been a complete shift in the way golf clubs are managed along with an array of membership joining and playing options for current and new golfers to suit our ever changing life styles.

I love introducing new players to the game, with the ladies through my GolfingGirl programme which I set up 6 years ago. It was one of the first pilots in the UK with a very successful proven track record. I introduce a number of playing sessions to men and ladies groups making the game more enjoyable, accelerating learning and ultimately helping with shot and decision making skills all which help to avoid slow play with increased knowledge. Sarah Bennett PGA Fellow Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf Club started to lay the foundation to help to grow Junior Golf in Essex. One objective was to develop the current junior section at Three Rivers Golf Club which included an introductory coaching and playing pathway for new players.

The Golf Foundation kindly provided their support for the project and I am delighted that much of the groundwork is now in place for 2016 and beyond, but there is much hard work ahead. I look forward to demonstrating the benefits of such a programme with improved opportunities for new players.
